Portland, Oregon – James Tobin is an avid gamer from the Atari era to the present day, and he has no plans of giving up his favorite leisure activity, but after a visit to his doctor he has found a healthier way to enjoy gaming.
James was told that he has the early stages of cardiovascular disease, meaning that he is overweight and his body has ran out of places to store the extra calories so it is depositing the excess as fat in his arteries. James Doctor told him that unless he gets his weight under control the extra stress it is placing on his body to just do daily activities is going to cause him to age faster and die younger as his heart can not keep up to the work load.
James Doctor told him that if he would decrease his calories and slowly increase his activity levels he would be able to reverse this gradual weakening of his body that had taken him years to develop. So James began to think of ways to incorporate more activities into his daily life.
James knew that if he went gung-ho he would burn out and not change his habits permanently so he wanted to find a way to mix health into gaming. The solution he came up with worked so well he lost 20lbs in the first month and 50 lbs so far, 6 months to date.
While playing wow (World of Warcraft) he decided that when he died he would do a set of 10 of one of the following exercises; push-ups, squats, sit-ups, and chair assisted dips. He also replaced his soda and coffee fuel supply with water and to earn his game playing for the day he took a half mile walk.
James remarked that while it started off as something I needed to do, now it is something I look forward to doing. James also looks forward to going to the doctor now as he has been an example of what a patient could do with the right mindset according to his physician. Also according to his physician James has lengthened his lifespan as a result of his gaming/exercise mix and his sustainable diet and lifestyle changes.
James has also increased his overall state of happiness and become a productive member of the World of Warcraft community. He now produces a wow tutorial each month to help fellow new gamers.
